Kamuzu Barrage is a key instrument under NWRA in the management of the water resources in the country. In particular it controls the management of the Lake Malawi-Shire River hydrological System. This system is the most important in the country as 98% of the country’s power is produced on this system (Shire River). Additionally the navigation, sugar plantation, fishing industry, tourism industry, potable water supply to some cities are heavily dependent on this hydrological system. Hence is proper management is key and vital. The barrage controls the flow of water in this system to balance up all the needs sustainably.
