BOARD MEMBERS VISIT TO KAPICHIRA

Kapichira Hydro power station is the second largest producer of hydro power in the country after Tedzani. The station has been out of function since January,2022 due to damage of its ponds by Cyclone Ana. The station is now undergoing repair of its ponds. It is expected that the station will start operating around January,2023 on a partial output. Egenco is always in constant contact with the NWRA as far as the operation of the Barrage is concerned and the management of the whole Lake Malawi-Shire River system is concerned on a daily basis. The communication is done through the Directorate of the Water Resources Management and Development at the operational level and through the Executive Director on strategic level

The purpose was twofold
  • for the board members appreciate how the power station utilizes the water that is being supplied by NWRA through Kamuzu Barrage
  • to appreciate the extent of damage the cyclone Ana had caused on the dam for Kapichira Hydro Station. And to understand the progress made as to when the structure will be in operation.
  • Discuss what best possible measures can be put in place as regards coordination to help avoid similar occurrence of devastation
